Advocacy Group

The Miscarriages of Justice Advocacy Group campaigns for legislative change around wrongful convictions and human rights issues.

Our Miscarriages of Justice Advocacy Group commenced life as a working group, supporting criminal cases deemed as possible wrongful convictions after investigation by the legally tutored BoH Innocence Initiative students.

Due to Victorian further right of appeal restrictions in 2015, we initiated negotiations with the Victorian Government’s Attorney-General to change legislation and offer a further right of appeal. This change has now happened and brings Victoria into line with the legislative changes in South Australia and Tasmania.

Numerous approaches by lawyers and others about advocating for change to social justice and other human rights issues led to the expansion of its ideals and membership. In early 2020, under the chairmanship of esteemed lawyer Robert Richter QC, the Working Group name changed to Advocacy Group.

Key goals.

Today, the group is working to drive change around a number of issues, including:

  • The birthing procedures forced upon a mother giving birth in prison
  • 10-year-old children being labelled as criminally responsible
  • The need to change legislation in relation to a further right of appeal
  • Single parents being charged criminally for the non-payment of fines
  • Trafficking of women and young girls and female genital mutilation
  • Seek justice for women trapped as drug mules

Justice in an age of global dislocation.

BoH Advocacy Group member and international QC Professor Felicity Gerry travels widely speaking to the problems associated with the barbaric practices of trafficking women and girls, female genital mutilation and women trapped as drug mules.
